Jim Fitzpatrick Architects and Lump Studio engaged in close consultation with the National Museum and Art Gallery of Papua New Guinea to design and fabricate the Western Wall Art Works featured on the Western wall of APEC Haus.

The objects featured in the designs of the light feature panels that adorn the western wall of APEC Haus were chosen by NMAG curatorial staff to represent each of the 22 provinces Papua New Guinea. With the guidance of the board and staff of NMAG, Lump Sculpture Stuido meticulously traced each object and transferred the art works onto the panels to complete the installation which spans 80 metres in length.
The Lakatoi Sculpture was developed in close collaboration with Jim Fitzpatrick Architects, the PNG National Museum and Art Gallery (NMAG) and Oil Search (PNG) Limited. The sculpture references the sails of lakatoi sailing craft traditionally used in trading expeditions to the Papuan Gulf.

The sails of the sculpture are positioned as if at full sail symbolising not only the vigorous trade and explorer expeditions of the past but also celebrating the trade traditions that continue today.

The sculpture stands 12 metres tall with its sails embraced by the curved roof line of APEC Haus which was also designed with inspiration from lakatoi. The outer frame of each sail is constructed from marine grade stainless steel and filled with strips of hand-woven copper which represent the fabric of the sail.

Talk to us

We have installed sculptures in all kinds of spaces, and we have learnt to anticipate potential challenges and devise appropriate solutions ahead of time.
The more we know, the better we can plan. We encourage clients to provide photos, measurements, drawings and other detailed information prior to installation to make the process as smooth as possible.
We can also send one of our Lump Studio team members out to consult on site and recommend solutions for the best possible outcome.

Lighting

Some of our sculptures include lighting but many don’t. We can give you advice about how to light each piece for maximum effect. Alternatively, we can provide customised options to incorporate lighting into the object itself.

Baseplates and plinths

Some sculptures only require a simple base plate secured to a concrete footing for installation. These are easily dressed with stones or included in the garden bed. In other situations, the sculpture is most effectively displayed raised on a plinth. Your decision about how and where you install your sculpture will determine the size plinth you require. Talk to us about our custom-made plinths, our design team will help you select the right size and finish to compliment your choice of sculpture and space.

Security

Although it’s not something that anyone likes to think about, it is important to ensure that your sculpture is installed securely - especially if it is being displayed in a space that is accessible to the public.
Let us know if you’re planning to install your piece in an area with street frontage or in a public space and we will provide security fixings to make sure your sculpture is secure and remains that way for years to come.

This public sculpture installation comprising of multiple pieces was commissioned by Martin Spinks as a philanthropic gesture to celebrate the fishing culture of the hard-working people of Benaraby, a small town in the Gladstone Region of Queensland. Martin engaged Lump to fabricate this sculpture and install it for permanent display on the side of the Bruce HWY.

Martin’s concept was, “It was this big”’, a sculpture of two large hands measuring a barramundi fish between them. Lump Sculpture Studio’s designers and engineers worked closely in consultation with Martin to successfully fabricate and realise his vision.

Over 226 individual pieces of steel were welded together to form each of the faceted hands and another 11 separate aluminium segments form the silvery barramundi. The public art installation is a dynamic sculpture that constantly changes depending on your viewpoint.

The 4.5m tall corten steel hands are spaced wide apart, as if to demonstrate the size of a big barramundi caught in the nearby Boyne River. The big barra itself, is displayed in segments floating between the earthy, rusted hands, with “all of the good eating parts missing” as a passer-by noted during the installation.

The corten steel sculpture stands at the entrance of the centre at just over 4m tall. The piece is a proud representation of these important, living archaeological sites that bear significant evidence of the occupation and daily customs of the local indigenous peoples.

The inspiration: what is a scar tree?

Scarred trees are trees, often red gum or box gum, which have had bark removed by indigenous Australians. The bark was used for making canoes, shields, shelters and containers such as coolamons. The bark was removed by making deep cuts in a tree with a stone pickaxe or another similar tool.

This process left scars in the trunks of the trees. These scars usually have a regular shape that can be a square, diamond or rectangle and they often remain visible on trees that are more than 200 years old. Scarred trees are one of the easiest-to-find types of archaeological sites in Australia.

Celebrating local histories

In this case, the sculpture is representative of the scar trees that have provided materials, sustenance, community and heritage to the Wurundjeri tribe in the area known as the City of Casey.

Privacy

When using screens as a privacy solution it is important to consider the building regulations in your area. Building regulations vary by state and planning operates on a case by case basis. Our designs can be customised and certified to comply with Privacy regulations but remember to check your obligations first.

Window Coverings

Used as window coverings, screens can provide privacy while still letting in plenty of sunlight. Select a design that will be a beautiful feature viewed from inside and outside your home, or a more restrained design that won’t draw attention and will fit seamlessly with the façade.

Fencing

Screens are an excellent solution as a decorative feature to block out unsightly boundary fencing or install independently as an actual fencing solution. Remember though, there are laws in place that strictly outline the requirements of fencing. Some rules apply to some fences and not others, always check you are complying with your obligations before you begin.

Decorative Facades

Screens can be used as sculptural installations mounted on the façade of a building. These installations provide privacy and create a dramatic and distinctive architectural feature.

Garden Features and Art works

Decorative screens can be used to create a compelling feature in a garden. They also provide an ideal frame for climbing plants which look especially striking contrasted against the warm tones and texture of naturally rusted Corten steel.

The Lump Sculpture Studio has the means and the know how to create your custom-made screen, but start at the beginning, choose the right screen for the right purpose and be aware of your obligations if the screen is not being used purely as a decorative feature.

Tim Turner Photography

The concept of the “Shard” is to appear as if the raw, textured rust patina has sprung from the earth like a shard of rock. The changing nature of this material is left bare to be admired and follow the seasons, punctuated and enhanced by individually selected planting. They appear bold and emphatic, a natural ironstone rock chiseled into shape by the landscape.

Always conceived as a cluster of sculptures as well as a stand-alone sculpture, Chris said “Getting flexibility into the design so that it can be mounted both vertically and angled at 45 deg. was challenging”.

The "Shard" was designed with a double footplate incorporated into the form facilitating both types of mounting, which allows for variation when composing a cluster of vessels in assorted sizes.

Tim Turner Photography

Although at Lump we consider the new range of "Shard" planters to be a new “off the shelf” range, nothing made by Lump is really ever “off the shelf”. And like other Lump pieces, care and consideration needs to be taken when installing the pieces on site or in your home.

Due to the size and shape, "Shard" planters need to be securely bolted or chemically set into position.

At Lump we have a huge catalog of screens to choose from. And we are really great at thinking outside the square and using our creativity to customise our designs so that they are perfectly tailored to your project.

This project for example features mini louvers or 3D elements that open forward facing, protecting the building from the harsh north sun and the setting sun in the west providing both shelter and privacy.

Due to the unusual sizing of the windows, every panel used in the façade is an individually designed pattern and size; this is not something that was simply replicated from a cookie cutter design. And this is what gives the finished façade its naturally random appearance.

Aesthetically it is one thing to clad the façade of a building, but the functionality of the cladding is absolutely key to its success.
backyards. Much of our work tends to be sought after to adorn the
private areas of a residential home. But more and more we are seeing
the trend move toward the front.
Something I don’t normally bang on about much is the letterbox or the front door. But over the years at Lump we have gathered quite a
collection of customised pieces that make a big entrance. Literally.

Many of our light feature panels and screens have been customized to
incorporate functionality. The humble letterbox, front door, entrance gate or security fence is now, more than ever filled with design possibility.

It is easy to see why these residential projects are a couple of my favourite
examples of how the final touches of a residential home can be moved to
the front for all to see.

Little Red Photography

There is a strong sculptural element to this letterbox that compliments
the size and shape of the seemingly interlocking wall that follows into
the entrance garden. It sits high above the line of the fence with
strong contrasting materials and colours and clearly advertises the
address.

Complimenting the texture and appearance of the letterbox is a cluster of Lump Spheres, which effortlessly peek out from the upper levels of the residence.

Inside the gate, visitors are greeted with a Lump Stainless steel ethanol fire bowl and the warm textural tones of the Lump Faux Rust Finish, which has been applied to the front door.
be.
A Lump Letterbox is featured in the street scape along with a series of retaining walls and a great mix of architectural plants. Huge floating steps make a pathway up to the pool and the entertaining space which is set in the front yard to take advantage of the view of the bay. And over the spa is a canter levered pergola that features a Lump Ink Blot screen as the canopy that casts decorative reflections into the water.
Clearly not all residential projects are the same. But with a focus on
moving sculptural design aspects to the front of your home, it is to say
the least, an exciting starting point to draw inspiration from when
planning how you can make yours a big entrance too.Lump Sculpture Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15695077102624107215noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-399380393232063625.post-16130002625551839972019-06-27T07:00:00.000+10:002019-08-01T16:06:40.288+10:00Poolside with LumpAt lump we love nothing more than relaxing beside a
beautiful tranquil pool, and funnily enough we have an overwhelming collection
of work that is displayed poolside.

The poolside collection extends from decorative screens and canopies
to water features, light features and free standing sculptures.
At the recent Landscaping Victoria Industry Awards for 2015 one extraordinary Landscape took home 4 awards. Designed by Steve Taylor from C.O.S. Design and constructed by Hamilton Landscapes, The Beaumaris Project was awarded Landscape of the year (Hamilton Landscapes), Hard Structures in the Landscape (Hamilton Landscapes), Residential Landscape Construction over $300,000 (Hamilton Landscapes) and Landscape Design over 200 m2 (C.O.S. Part of the challenge of completing a landscape such as this one is the commitment of the client. Commitment to the journey and commitment ultimately to the end vision. This garden has exceeded the expectations of everyone involved, even its designer Steve Taylor. And on completion looking back, both Steve and Paul Hamilton of Hamilton Landscapes say it was one of the most challenging projects of their professional lives so far and a project that neither of them will ever forget.
Judges’ Comments
"Once you move on from the initial stunning impact of this landscape and take a closer look at the detail, you cannot be anything other than totally impressed. The judging panel were amazed by the level of complexity in the design and the execution noting that they have not seen a job of this caliber for a long time.
The project has been skilfully constructed using modern construction techniques and the latest materials. The structurally complex layout demanded minimal tolerances and extremely high levels of accuracy which have been delivered skilfully by Paul Hamilton and his team."

In particular, "Blow Hole" by Duncan Stemler installed in 2005 at the Docklands.

“Blow Hole” is a 15-meter kinetic sculpture in Melbourne’s Dockland precinct. Commissioned as part of the Docklands redevelopment, Stemler proposed the kinetic wind powered sculpture as well as another piece, “Forest” that was also successful. “Blow Hole” is made up of a large aluminum ring and a series of different sized aluminum rods with anodized cups on each end, which catch the wind and make them rotate.

Kinetic sculptures when considered successful can be very effective; the fact that they are constantly changing gives them a completely different feel to an inanimate sculpture. But having said that it’s really important that the piece looks good when it isn’t moving, which in the case of Blow Hole, in my opinion I don’t think it really achieves. To its credit it is an incredibly eye catching piece when it’s moving but can a sculpture which is only effective half the time and only “O.K.” the other half be considered a great piece?

When the docklands precinct was completed the overall community consensus on the 30 odd pieces of public art was that collectively, they were a bit too safe. There aren’t any that would be deemed bad, but there aren’t any, which are particularly impressive.

At the end of the day this is the nature of public art pieces, you never know how the public is going to respond until they are installed. Public art supposedly creates discussion, so in a way a controversial piece, which has mixed or even bad reviews, could be conceived to be better than a mediocre piece, which inspires little or no conversation.
Love it or hate it?Even today, when there seems to be public sculpture popping up on every corner, in a public arena modern sculpture is still often met with resistance.

But even works that are not considered as “great” by the wider community or works that are even considered to be “failures” still have the opportunity to change our way of thinking.

For instance the Vault, better known as the Yellow Peril, by Ron Robertson-Swann is an abstract minimalist piece originally built for the Melbourne City Square, installed in May of 1980.

Its form was considered unsympathetic to the location and the cost excessive and wasteful. After much public and media uproar, the sculpture was removed approximately 7 months later.

The Vault, in the eyes of the public at the time, may very well have been considered a failure. But it united a government, a council, the media and a community in the question for its worth, its cause and ultimately its removal. And we all know that uniting all of those parties is no mean feat.

Eventually the following year the Vault was positioned at Batman Park and then later moved to its current home at The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art in Southbank.

Uniting a community is certainly no failure and it may also be only one reason we need public sculpture, but at Lump we think it’s a great one to start with.

Like everybody, we love the warm natural appearance of rust. And lets face it; the varying tones of yellow, red, brown and sometimes purple ochre go with everything and accentuate just about any other colour in close proximity.

Unlike mild steel, Corten steel it will not rust through when left out in the elements and in fact, a protective layer forms on the surface of the steel after it has been exposed to poor weather.

This protective layer acts as a barrier and helps to prevent the steel from rusting through and creating holes.

What’s more amazing is that the surface continually regenerates itself each time it is subjected to poor weather creating its own protective coating and our lovely, remarkable rusted finish. Awesome.

Cool things we know about working with Corten Steel....

Corten Steel is double the tensile strength of mild steel.

It WILL leach a rust stain onto surrounding surfaces when exposed to poor weather.

There is NO way to seal off the rust or avoid the rust stains leaching onto surrounding surfaces.

The colour and surface will change depending on the elements it is exposed to.

At Lump we make all kinds of fabulous things from 1.6mm –and 3mm thick sheets as well as large over size sheets and 6mm plate.

Safe structural welding requires super special imported, BHP specified, low carbon-welding wire.

Special welding techniques are needed to ensure welding spots corrode at the same rate as the steel.

A more uniform rusted finish is achieved if the steel is sandblasted before rusting.
The rusted finish is also achieved faster with sandblasting prior to rusting.

Richard Serra rocked the world with his sculpture and use of Corten Steel; he is bulk ace.

The five tonne "Dervish" is an intimidating piece of minimalist sculpture.

Many of Meadmore’s pieces have an almost effortless free flowing form despite their size and their material, "Dervish" is a perfect example of this. It’s made to appear as if the structure has been constructed out of 1 large length of steel and twisted over itself to create a loop in the middle.

I think it’s the structure’s fluid appearance yet rigid nature which makes the viewer question how it was made, and it’s the sculpture’s simplicity which makes it so aesthetically appealing to just about everyone. It also acts as a pretty interesting playground for young children.

Clement Meadmore was an industrial designer and sculptor and also briefly studied Aero Nautical Engineering. Perhaps it was his interest in mathematics which inspired his work with geometric manipulations. A similar piece of Meadmore’s work "Awakening" can be found at St. James Square on Bourke Street.

All the way back in April this year we launched a new little Lump store, since then we have had our heads down and our tails up while we work hard at developing our business and developing new designs as well as relaxing into a new routine dividing our time between our manufacturing studio in Fairfield and our new store in Abbotsford.

One thing we have really come to realise over the last few months is that Lump as a beast on its own commands just as much if not more courage, creativity and devotion as does our art work, designer product range and ability to get our work to market.

With this in mind and with some very important lessons in business under our belts we have successfully managed to open our new Lump store and make the two Lump locations work together. We have also managed to develop some stunning new products like the Shard Planters all while maintaining our regular production and involvement in an array of exciting commercial and residential projects.

We are happy to see Spring kick in and we are officially giving winter the boot, visit us at Lump Abbotsford for a friendly chat about our new work, you can find us at 235 Johnston St Tuesday to Friday from 8am – 4.30pm other times by appointment only.
This new space in Abbotsford is where we now display our latest and greatest ideas as well as a selection of our designs including planters, decorative panelling, screening products, light feature panels and of course sculptures.

In particular the new Lump concept store will provide a quiet and relaxed space to consult with clients on individual custom projects.

All of our fabricating will of course still be managed at our Fairfield workspace. And although the workshop is an exciting environment to be in, the store will provide us with a quiet and uncluttered space where we can design and discuss the best solutions for our clients.

Here's how it all went down...

So MIFGS madness has passed and we are settling down into real life again. It would not be right though, to let MIFGS go by with out detailing the beautiful gardens we were privileged to be involved with. The first one being very special indeed, ‘The Patriarch’s Garden’ by Mark Browning from Cycas Landscape Design and Consultancy.

If you have been reading the Lump blog, you would know that we have been working with Mark for a number of years and we have experienced many a show-time adventure with him. Mark is not only a great designer with who we share a mutual appreciation of aesthetics when it comes to landscape design and sculpture. But he is also an astonishing and unwaveringly kind individual. His commitment to modern landscape design incorporating locally sourced materials is steadfast. And his close nit team of sponsors and suppliers is revered as lovingly by him as his extended family openly embracing them all with hugs, kisses and “I love you’s”.

Chris and I and all of the crew at Lump thoroughly enjoy working with Mark and we look forward to the next adventure. Congratulations Mark. BEST IN SHOW and you cant beat that!

Below is an article written by Laeta Crawford detailing Marks design and how Lump contributed to “The Patriarch’s Garden”.

Sculptural tribute to family

Husband-and-wife team Chris Vassallo and Timothea Jewell know all too well the value of family, and consequently were thrilled to be invited by renowned landscape designer Mark Browning to work on a tribute garden to Mark’s father, Graham, who passed away last year.

The resulting ‘The Patriarch’s Garden’, by Cycas Landscape Design, is a tribute to family, unity and the journey through life, with the main sculpture designed by Lump Sculpture Studio symbolising Mark’s father as the central figure within his extended family.

The sculpture, entitled Cocoon, stands 2.35m tall and is made up of hundreds of small, wish bone-shaped pieces individually welded together to make a finished and transparent cocoon shape.

The sculpture is located within a gorge and two spines of quarried bluestone radiate from it, with the spines representing Mark and his sister and their respective families.

Diagonally behind the sculpture is a conversation zone shaded by another Lump piece – a Wood Stack Screen used as a canopy – while a custom-made kidney-shaped viewing porthole by Lump is featured in the main wall structure of the garden.

Chris said the Cocoon sculpture in particular had been an incredibly emotional piece to work on.

“The importance of family is something that we can all relate to – it made me think about my own family and how the different branches together form one strong unit,” Chris said.

Chris and Tim have created one of Australia’s most successful metal design businesses – Lump Sculpture Studio – while raising a young family and balancing all of the associated challenges that come with it.

Tim said she and Chris were honoured to collaborate with Mark again on such a personal and precious tribute.

“We (Lump) have worked with Mark on many projects over the years, from our first outing at the 2007 Chelsea Flower Show to this year’s Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, and we feel very fortunate to not only enjoy a great friendship but also a mutual appreciation of design and aesthetics when it comes to our work,” Tim said.

“While we always love working with Mark, this garden has touched us deeply.

“It made us stop and appreciate what our family means to us and I really hope that visitors to this year’s Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show will also take time out to visit the garden and pay their own respects to family.”
The 2015 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show is

The garden will feature a sculptural piece made from a
series of different brass and stainless steel mesh materials, constructed using
a delicate and experimental process giving it an ephemeral appearance much like
an Iris coming into Blossom. It’s an unusual piece for Lump, it is unlike any
of our other pieces in a structural sense but it is very much in keeping with
the organic themes seen through our catalogue of works.

Lump has been lucky enough to be working on a project for
our neighbor to the north Papua New Guinea. The project is part of a
redevelopment of the Garamut Port area of Port Moresby. Lump was approached by the
Sydney based architecture firm Cullen Feng who are managing the contract for
the redevelopment, to create a piece which would stand on the end of the Port
as a center piece. Jon Cullen director of Cullen Feng architecture gave
us words like “enigmatic” and “elegant” for the brief.

We wanted to create a piece that represents us and is
something we can be proud of, but more importantly represents the site. We've
worked very closely with Cullen Feng to design a totem like figure to stand on
the water’s edge, between two new buildings designed by Cullen Feng.

The final design which was chosen for construction is a 7.2m
abstracted figure made from over 150 Corten steel panels of different
shapes and sizes. The pieces are set on different angles to create a shape that
looks somewhat like a figure but maintains its rigid, abstract form. This look
and feel is similar to the nature of our ‘Shard planters’ whose shape is made
to look somewhere in between a normal planter and natural geological form.

The piece has been an exciting project to work on and even
though most of our work is completed it still has a journey to make all the way
to Port Moresby for installation. Our last big challenge is fitting it into a
shipping container!

Summer is almost all but over, which we are of course all very
upset about, here at lump… Having said that there is always a bit of joy at
this time of year, because we receive photos from our wonderful clients!

The end of 2014 was very busy, getting everything finished in
time for the summer break. It’s wonderful to see our hard work has paid off and
is being enjoyed by people all over the country.

Sydney. The piece had to be lifted by a crane to the second floor! Despite the
fact the photos don’t look terribly summery we still think the space looks
great. If you look closely you can also see one of our sphere sculptures on the
floor above.
Even though this job wasn’t a residential project I’m sure
there are plenty of people in Cairns who are really happy with how this job
worked out. The structure, which is clad in our Golden Ash screens as
designed to hide a power substation on a nature strip. Not only does it perform

photos from happy clients enjoying their new outdoor areas. It makes all of our

The petition was calling for the right to vote gained through the democratic process for female Victorians.

Despite the petition collecting more than 30,000 signatures and the lower house passing the Women's Franchise Bill, the upper house rejected the bill. It wasn’t until the Adult Suffrage Act was passed in 1908 when women gained the right to vote.

The sculpture made by Susan Hewitt and Penelope Lee, installed at Burston Reserve near Parliament House in 2008 is a representation of the actual petition itself, which with over 30,000 signatures measured 260 meters in length. The sculpture itself appears to flow underground as a footpath intersects the main form. And it is actually 20 meters in length, made from steel and painted in Parchment white.

The sculpture has been met with mixed reviews with some people claiming that such an important moment in Victoria’s history would be better commemorated with a traditional bronze sculpture.

The sculpture’s rounded ends and free flowing form make it very aesthetically pleasing and regardless of what it represents I believe it is a nice piece of public art. But because it is a modern sculpture representing a major historical event I imagine it will always face some criticism.
