Lump at Sculpture in the Tulips

This week the Tesselaar 2012 Tulip Festival began. There are loads of things to do at Tesselaar with each weekend catering for a different special event.  But every day of the festival you can go and see Sculpture in the Tulips. An exhibition of sculptures displayed amongst the flower beds of sprouting tulips organised by Mark Cowie and the Association of Sculptors of Victoria.  There is a $10,000 Prize up for grabs and the pleasure of becoming part of the permanent collection in the Tesselaar gardens, as well as the coveted People's Choice Award.

This year Chris has entered his new sculpture Exo Skeleton, displayed for the first time at the exhibition. Exo Skeleton is made from Corten steel with a natural rusted finish and stands approximatly 2m tall. Just as the name suggests it is representative of an external skeleton. And in this particular case the external skeleton of a crustacean or shell. The Corten steel and structural elements that make up the form of the sculpture perfectly emulate the protective nature of the live exoskeleton, acting as a barrier and defence against all predators and outside forces. The external structure of the sculpture is highlighted with structural spines and a decorative laser cut design, allowing viewing portholes into the centre of the sculpture where you can closely sight the intricate workings of the build.

The Exo Skeleton displayed at The Tulip Farm is the first sculpture in a series of eight sculptures of its kind. You can see the sculpture on display at the Tesselaar Tulip Farm from the 13th of September to the 9th of October.
