Sotto sculpture

Ok so it’s still a little early to know if we have been accepted to the big exhibition at Yering Station yet. But while writing about "Amplitudes" last week I started thinking about all of our sculptures at Lump. Because lets face it, its what we love doing most. And we are extremely fortunate that we work in an industry where making sculpture forms part of our daily working lives. That still just blows me away.

So I thought I would take this opportunity to bang on just a little bit more about another favorite piece of mine that we designed, developed and created here with our very own hands at Lump Studio. "Sotto" sculpture.

"Sotto" When roughly translated from Italian, means 'what lies beneath'. The name is fitting; while giving the impression of being solid, when viewed from an angle, it is possible to see straight through this piece. Measuring 1200mm T x 1200mm W x 450 deep this beautiful piece brings to life a seemingly impossible idea. Making a sculpture out of steel using a technique, which has more often than not been reserved for soft timbers and manufactured boards. And as you can see here, with a little help of some crafty engineering we have, if I do say so myself, been incredibly successful with the application of the technique using corten steel.

At Lump the "Sotto" sculpture is very affectionately known as “The handbag” and made its big debut back in 2009 at the Tesselaar Tulip Sculpture Exhibition. Unfortunately "Sotto" has sold out and is no longer in production but with a little bit of persuasion Chris might be willing to let go of his beloved “artists proof”.
